Machined aluminum prototype

Product discovery & fabrication

From idea to object, end to end.

First Form Studio is a Portland-based design and fabrication practice. Whether you need a single part made or a full product defined — we bring design thinking and hands-on making to every project, from the first sketch to the final unit.

01

Discover

Define the problem, map constraints, align on what success looks like.

02

Visualize

3D models, renderings, and mockups to pressure-test ideas early.

03

Iterate based on real feedback from a real object in your hands.

Fabrication Services We Offer

3D modeling

Parametric CAD in Fusion 360 — from initial concept geometry to production-ready files. Design for manufacturability built in from the start.

Renderings & visualization

Photorealistic product renders and presentation-ready visuals — for stakeholder reviews, crowdfunding, or making the decision clear before you cut material.

FDM 3D printing

Fused deposition modeling for functional prototypes, jigs, and short-run parts in a range of engineering plastics. Fast turnaround, no minimums.

Resin 3D printing

High-detail resin printing for appearance models, casting patterns, and parts requiring fine surface finish. Multiple resin types available.

Laser cutting

CO2 laser cutting and engraving on wood, acrylic, leather, and other sheet materials. Ideal for custom enclosures, display components, flat-pack assemblies, and signage.

CNC routing

Precision CNC routing for wood, foam, plastics, composites, and aluminum sheet. Well-suited to tooling, furniture components, architectural details, and custom fixtures.

Product discovery

Start with the right problem.

Before anything is modeled or made, it pays to understand exactly what you're solving for. Discovery is structured early-phase work that clarifies your product's purpose, users, and constraints — so that when fabrication starts, every decision is grounded.

This is also where obstacles get solved creatively. Budget constraints, timeline pressure, unclear requirements — discovery is where those get named and navigated, not handed back to the client unsolved.

Not sure if you need discovery?

If you have an idea but aren't sure what to build first, who it's for, or how to make it real — that's exactly what this is for. Discovery can precede fabrication or stand alone.

What discovery includes

  • Foam sketch modelsrapid, hands-on form exploration before committing to CAD
  • Problem & user framingdefining who this is for and what success looks like
  • Constraint mappingmaterials, manufacturing, budget, timeline
  • Concept frameworksstructured directions to evaluate before investing in development
  • Feature prioritizationwhat to build first, what to defer, what to cut
  • A clear path forwarda defined next step, not just a report

How we work

The gap between design and fabrication is where things get lost.

Most designers hand off to makers. Most makers wait for specs. First Form sits at that intersection — bringing design thinking and hands-on fabrication to every project, from the first sketch to the final unit.

No translation loss. No handoffs. One partner who stays invested in the outcome. Whether that's a single custom part or a full product development engagement.

01

Fluency across mediums

From foam sketch models to ZBrush sculpting to clay to CAD to casting — the process follows the problem, not the other way around. No handoffs, no translation loss between digital and physical craft.

02

Short-run production design

Designing for repeatability from the start — mold design, silicone casting, jig and fixture fabrication so part 10 looks like part 1. The infrastructure of small-scale production, not just one-offs.

03

Creative problem-solving under constraint

When budgets shift, timelines compress, or the original approach stops working — we find another way. Comfortable with ambiguity, resourceful under pressure, and focused on keeping the project moving.

04

Collaborative, not transactional

We work inside your project — not at arm's length. That means understanding the bigger picture, communicating proactively, and making good decisions independently without adding management overhead.
